Theatre arts has remained a cornerstone at NJY Camps. As Cedar Lake Camp’s theatre arts director from the early 1960’s and into the 1980’s, Steve Zawel embodied the passion, dedication, creativity and charisma that it took to build this program into a show-stopping success. The emotional and overwhelming response to his productions even led to the development of staff musicals.
Steve created a professional workshop experience, producing alumni that have gone on to successful careers on Broadway, in TV and film, as opera singers and radio personalities and in other professions related to the performing arts. Even for those who didn’t pursue careers in the arts, Steve provided invaluable skills — confidence, grace under pressure, the art of presentation – that helped children grow as individuals.
To honor this award-winning director, teacher, friend – and recipient of the 2011 Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award – the CLC theatre “kids” have created this scholarship fund to pay homage to this important program and our mentor.
Pay it forward! Inspire a love for the theatre. Give a child with an interest in dramatic arts the confidence to pursue their dream. Let’s send a child who has a love for the theatre to take part in NJ Y Camp’s time-honored theatre program who would not otherwise have the resources to attend.
Donate now. Together we can send a child to camp who has dreams of the theatre.
