Tzevet B'Yachad (TBY)
Tzevet B’Yachad (TBY) is an arm of our staffing structure on our Milford campus. Sponsored by the generosity of The Shirvan Family, Round Lake alumni are able to return to camp as staff members with the needed support to have a meaningful and enriching work experience, and continue to be active members of our community. The goal of TBY is to foster self-confidence and socialization, as well as to develop job readiness and independent living skills.
The TBY staff work in areas such as the main administration building, service, maintenance, the kitchen, art shops, horseback riding, etc. All participants contribute to managing the camp canteen, which provides the opportunity for skill building around customer service, inventory and organization. The program is overseen by the Round Lake Director in combination with the seasonal vocational coordinator who collaborates with NJW and CLC staff on an ongoing basis to ensure the participants are developing important job skills and receiving supervision. Job coaches provide support during the day and fulfill the role of Resident Assistant (RA) in shared housing with the TBY staff. Supports are provided during days off and time off camp as well.
The TBY participants are full members of the staff, participating in 3 days of orientation prior to the campers’ arrival and enjoying staff engagement programming throughout the summer. Each TBY participant joins our community at no charge and receives a stipend for their contribution to camp.
Development of soft skills is provided to our participants through ongoing sessions around topics such as:
- Customer service
- Effective communication
- Problem solving
- Stress management
- Asking for help
- Active listening
- Receiving Feedback
In the evening, the group ventures off camp on a weekly basis to work on hard skills. Examples include:
- Money management and culinary skills developed by grocery shopping on a budget and cooking dinner as a team at camp
- Trips to the laundromat to increase independence
- Night out to dinner to boost conversational skills, as well as to learn how to split a bill and figure out gratuity
