December 2001

Dear Alumni,

The events of September 11th have made us all pause to reevaluate our lives and our role in society.  We have been forced to ask ourselves what really matters.  As an organization devoted to providing a secure, nurturing experience for thousands of children, we look to see how we can now make a difference.  In preparing for the Summer of 2002, we recognize the importance of giving this Jewish camp experience to as many children as possible.  Therefore, we have donated 17 spots at our Milford and Lake Como camps for an American Camping Association-NY sponsored project for children affected by the disaster.

NJ Y Camp Alumni Andrea Atkins (1969-1974 camper, 1976 staff) recalls in the article Girls in White how going to summer camp taught her to see religion in a new way.  In our times of uncertainty, it is very comforting to remember the good old safe and secure days of camp; and the growth and development, fun and friendships we shared.

The NJ Y Camps staff is doing everything it can to make camp even more special for all the children this summer. So reflect on the positive impact camp had for you and, if you are able, please make a contribution to this year’s Scholarship Fund.  There are many Jewish children whose parents cannot afford to send them to camp.  Your gift will help them to experience the wonders of a summer at one of the NJ Y Camps.

Have a bright and festive Hanukah and may the New Year be one of peace, healing, safety and love for us all.

Thanks for your continued support.

Very truly yours,

Bruce Nussman
